If you saved your company $1 million, you’d brag about it, right? How about $100 million? Certainly you’d be looking for a few pats on the back for such a massive sum of loot. A report in The Detroit Free Press reveals that Yoshimi Inaba, chairman and CEO of Toyota Motors Sales in the U.S., allegedly did such bragging back on July 6, 2010, but the topic was “Wins for Toyota” and the subject was safety.

The Freep obtained the internal presentation on Sunday as Toyota handed over thousands of documents to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in advance of its February 24 hearing. The over $100 million in savings was spread across nine points outlined by Inaba in the presentation, which outlined savings obtained by delaying safety regulations and avoiding investigations.

Inaba’s presentation states that the company saved $124 million with “added lead-time and phase in” for a side-impact airbag standard. There is also a bullet under the defects subheading that says the company saved $100 million by negotiating an equipment recall on the Toyota Camry and Lexus ES. Yahoo expands on that bullet in a recent report, saying that the automaker limited the amount of vehicles affected by the 2007 recall to 55,000, saving 50,000 man-hours of labor. Other items mentioned in the internal presentation are the avoidance of an investigation for the Tacoma rust issue and $11 million in savings by delaying a rule for tougher door locks on the Sienna.

While it’s likely that there are similar documents floating around the halls of every major automaker, Toyota is under more scrutiny than normal after three high-profile recalls have severely damaged its once sterling reputation for quality and reliability. Avis has managed to significantly narrow its losses in 2009, recording a US$77 million loss before tax compared to a US$1.3 billion loss for the calendar year of 2008.

This was despite revenues dropping 14% down to US$5.1 billion for the 12 months ending December, 2009 compared to the same period a year earlier.  Avis has attributed the result to its ongoing cost reduction program.

“In the fourth quarter, we saw… strong pricing, tepid demand, a healthy used-car market and rigorous cost control throughout our operations. This enabled us to post significant year-over-year improvement in earnings,” said Ronald Nelson, Avis Budget Group Chairman and CEO.

“Our decisions to remain tight-fleeted and further reduce unprofitable transactions helped us increase our Domestic Car Rental EBITDA by more than $80 million versus the prior-year quarter, despite lower revenues and lower rental volumes.”

In 2010 Avis expects year-over-year rental volume comparisons to continue improving, while cost-savings initiatives already in place will continue to pay off.

Per-unit fleet costs are also expected to decline year-over-year as Avis cheap flights from Townsville to Gladstone intends to add more model-year 2010 vehicles to its fleet.

Barnaby Southcombe’s “I, Anna” shot to the top of the list at the EFM’s Co-Production Market this year.The noir thriller, which has Charlotte Rampling and Gabriel Byrne attached, is being produced by Southcombe and Felix Vossen’s Embargo Films in London, and Paris-based Arsam Intl. One of the most fun parts of the Chicago Auto Show every year is that Illinois is also host to the Volo Auto Museum. Volo is one of those museum/used car dealerships that always has some of the most entertaining and outrageous cars in its inventory. One of the things they are best known for is their collection of rolling Hollywood memorabilia, and at this year’s show, they have rolled out about a dozen vehicles that show off their range of Tinseltown metal.

First up is the Mellow Yellow NASCAR racer that Tom Cruise piloted in Days of Thunder. They even have a monitor running movie clips featuring Cole Trickle beside the very seat he sat in for the filming – and no, it wasn’t a booster seat. Next to that is Speed Racer’s Mach 5, signed by Kustom Kar King George Barris. That sits alongside one of the General Lee Dodge Chargers from the Dukes of Hazzard movie and a really odd Buick Grand National. The GN is one of the cars that Vin Diesel drove in Fast and Furious 4. It is totally gutted inside and has a wild rear steering system that made us do a double-take.

Across from that is the villain car from The Great Race and the awesomely wacky Turtle Mobile from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Our favorite star car, though – and the one that looks most at home here in Chicago – is the Blues Mobile, driven by one Joliet Jake and one Elwood Blues, a.k.a. “The Blues Brothers.” It even has the comically oversized loudspeaker still strapped to the roof. All-in, the Volo display is fun attraction here in Chicago and an example of why this show is always so popular with the public.

Volkswagen Sales Up by 23% in January

Volkswagen Canada announced that it increased its sales by 23.2% during the month of January versus the same time period last year for a total of 2,332 new vehicles (2009: 1,893). This solid start to the New Year was combined with growth in the Volkswagen Brand’s share of the total Canadian light vehicle market to 2,86% (2009: 2.46%) as industry figures showed an increase of 6,2% against January 2009.
Volkswagen credited higher sales of its recently introduced new Golf Family, including 2 of the 3 finalists for the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s 2010 Canadian Car of the Year, the Golf Wagon TDI Clean Diesel and the Golf GTI. The Touareg TDI Clean Diesel, AJAC finalist for 2010 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year, contributed to a 164.0 % increase in overall Touareg sales vs. January 2009. Both the 2010 Canadian Car and Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year awards will be announced on February 11 at the upcoming Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto.
Other models enjoyed sales rises during the month, including Tiguan (+27.1%) and Jetta Sedan (+12.9%). TDI Clean Diesel sales represented 30.8% of total Volkswagen deliveries in January.
